What do Professor Henry Louis Gates, Sargent James Crowley and President Barrack Obama have in Common? History. Also, an apology.
You would think that the bigger the man, the easier it would be to offer up a simple thing like an apology; just three small words, I am sorry. Unfortunately, it isn’t. Those three little words can change the course of the world and most likely they could have changed history too.
The Scene: The Harvard Professor got locked out of his house. A concerned neighbor seeing a possibly suspicious activity called 911.
The Police responded.
Fact: The Officer, Sargent Crowley and The Harvard Professor got into a verbal dispute.
Fact: The Harvard Professor got arrested.
Fact: A few days later, President Barrack Hussein Obama got himself involved.
Of course this mess could have been avoided. Example: ’Sorry Officer I seem to have locked..’ ’Sorry to have disturbed you Professor..’
This leaves us with just one more apology to be made.
Keep in mind The United States has history. Some of the history is vile.
Much of the violations committed have not been properly addressed nor atoned for. No sorry.
President Obama in an unprecedented moment, commented not knowing all the facts, on his buddy’s Prof. Gates’s case during a nationally televised live Press Conference. Turns out that his expressed statement/sentiment (“.. the police acted stupidly..”) and his premature assessment of the case were wrong. To his credit Obama now admits, as usual in sooo many words, that he was, wrong.(?) “..I could have calibrated my words differently.”
The sad truth is that once again Obama came face to face with a challenge; a social challenge. The candidate of CHANGE had the opportunity to come clean. Look into the eyes of the country and the world and apologize.
Sorry, (that) ‘Sorry seems to be the hardest word’.
Rich Says:
Let’s see, Charlie admits that the President said he was wrong……………….. OK, what part of that is not an apology?
The President admits he could have used (calibrated) his words better. He took the action of sitting down with all concerned parties to smooth things over and than because he didn’t part the Red Sea then somehow this is indicative of being a bad President.
I don’t remember any President in the past that have acted so graciously. Has Bush apologized for torturing innocent people including US Citizens and killing our soldiers by illegally invading a soveriegn country?
No, he hasn’t. So why the big deal about something so small and insignificant that at best it gives a bunch of drunks at the local bar something to talk about.
People are loosing their homes because of bancrupcy, have lost their jobs because of a corrupt past administration and the focuses is on one little comment about nothing.
Now let’s hear the real story

Did Bush and his handlers feel sorry for the hundreds of thoudsands of people who died because of them. Or how about all the people who are out of a job, or bancrupt from medical bills?
Why should Obama apologize for what he’s done in his life? He has tried to help people, is that some sort of sin now?
Sorry is indeed a hard word to say and mean esp. when you are the President. I wonder if the Pres. ever felt sorry in his life?
Great writing and most thought provoking.
